How do I apply to CaRMS if I am an IMG?

As an International Medical Graduate (IMG), to be eligible to participate for the R-1 Main Residency Match, you must:

  1. Be attending or have graduated from a school listed with the World Directory of Medical Schools (https://search.wdoms.org/);
  2. Have written and passed the National Assessment Collaboration (NAC) Examination
  3. Have written and passed the Medical Council of Canada Qualifying Exam Part I

    NOTE 1:
    Exam requirements are set by each province. Should they have any exceptions regarding exam requirements for the upcoming match year, they will be updated here: https://www.carms.ca/match/r-1-main-residency-match/eligibility-criteria/#tab-1569521374022-4-2
    NOTE 2: To apply for the IMG BC Clinical Assessment Program and/or the Alberta IMG Program, and consequently be eligible for positions in British Columbia and/or Alberta, candidates must have written the MCCQE Part I by no later than July. Please view their website for more specific dates/information.

      4. Must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada and have your Medical Identification Number for Canada (MINC).

The above-mentioned criteria are the basic requirements to allow you to participate in the CaRMS match and are not necessarily the only criteria to apply for positions within the different provinces. At this link (http://www.carms.ca/en/residency/r-1/eligibility-criteria/provincial-criteria/) you will find the provincial criteria section of the CaRMS website. Criteria listed under a given province in this section will apply to all programs within that province. It is your responsibility to ensure you have read the information provided under the provincial restrictions to meet all the necessary requirements when applying for the programs of your choice.

To see a list of available programs for the R-1, click here: http://www.carms.ca/en/residency/r-1/program-descriptions/ Each program is solely responsible for application and document criteria. Each program will indicate what documents are required, which exams need to be passed and which provincial assessments are preferred. You should also check the provincial criteria of the province in which the program is found as well.

Registration begins in July of a given year.
