Do I need a language exam?

International Medical Graduates must almost always provide some kind of proof of language proficiency. The acceptable options and possible exemptions can differ depending on the province as well as the language of the program. Some examples of this are that some provinces may accept the TOEFL-ibt exam while other provinces do not. If applying to a French program, you will be required to provide proof of French proficiency such as the Test de Français Internationale (TFI). Attestation letters may also be an option if the language of instruction was the same as the program's language.

All applicants must review the provincial criteria and program descriptions to find lists of acceptable language options so they can coordinate what language documents(s) or exams(s) are needed in their applications.

Canadian Medical Graduates and United States Medical Graduates who completed their medical studies in English but wish to apply to French programs, must ensure they provide proof of French language proficiency (such as the TFI) or vice versa. All applicants must review the provincial criteria and program descriptions to find lists of acceptable language options so they can coordinate what language documents(s) or exams(s) are needed in their applications.

For example, Ontario's criteria states that:

"Applicants must be able to communicate in the language of instruction and patient care of the matching school."

This mean's that even if you study medicine in French, you still have to be able to communicate in English if that is the language of instruction at the program you are applying to (and vice versa).
There are cases, such as programs offered at the University of Ottawa, where they request that applicants who have studied at a French speaking institution provide a statement that they are proficient in English and that they are able to work in English at the level of a residency program. This can include prior studies or exams you may have taken.
For other Ontario programs that don't have specific language requirements for applicants coming from French programs, it would be at their discretion to ask for further proof of language proficiency if they judge it necessary.
