As of July, 2025, the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) in the United States is no longer accrediting Canadian medical schools.
What does this mean for me?
This means individuals who graduate from Canadian medical schools on or after July 1, 2025, will be considered international medical graduates (IMG) when applying to residency programs in the United States.
If you are a CMG looking to apply to residency positions in the United States, review the below chart to determine what action is required.

You must register and obtain certification from the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG). Refer to ECFMG for more information on this process: Inquiries regarding application to U.S. residency programs should be directed to ECFMG directly. CaRMS is not involved in this process. |
I am a CMG who graduated medical school prior to July 1, 2025, and want to apply for residency in the United States. |
Apply to the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS) by registering for your token here: https://www.carms.ca/the-match/application-to-the-us-eras/ |

You must apply through the ResidencyCAS application system. To receive access to the ResidencyCAS application portal, send an email to eras@carms.ca with the following information:

You must apply through the Central Application system. To begin the application process, you must register directly with Central Application and then request ‘access’ through your account. Your access will be granted by CaRMS once it is received. |
I am a CMG who is looking to apply to specialized graduate training in fellowship programs in the US. |
You must contact the ERAS Fellowship Documents Office (EFDO). CaRMS is not involved in this process. |
