There are two matches that offer a second iteration:
- The R-1 Main Residency Match
- The Fall Subspecialty Residency Match (FSRM)
In the R-1 Main Residency Match, any programs with unfilled positions after the first iteration are required to participate in the second iteration. However, this is not the case for the Fall Subspecialty Residency Match (FSRM).
If a program has unfilled positions at the end of the first iteration of the FSRM, CaRMS will “move” your program over to the second iteration as a courtesy, but it will be at the discretion of your PGME Office whether they wish to participate the program in the second iteration, or not. Therefore, there is no obligation to participate in the second iteration of the FSRM.
