Fellowships are defined as non-accredited specialized training experience offered by postgraduate training institutions, with supervised patient contact that does not lead to certification/licensure.
Training as a clinical or research fellow in a department of medicine is not accredited nor is it approved as residency training towards certification by the Royal College.
Fellowship training experience can either be based around:
- research activities and contributions to knowledge or;
- have a broader scope that includes other non-research related objectives like professional development, leadership.
Ensure that the information entered within your CaRMS Online application reflects the type of fellowship experience you have, whether it is research-based or non-research related objectives
Clinical fellows must be able to provide evidence that they are recognized as specialists in the jurisdiction where they are currently practicing medicine.
Fellowships (and observerships) are not electives.
