As a file reviewer, what should I be aware of when considering applications from international medical graduates (IMGs)?

While most applications from Canadian and US medical graduates have a similar look and feel, applications from international medical graduates can vary greatly in appearance. For example, not all international medical schools provide students with a dean’s letter. If this is the case, we have asked international applicants to either include in their personal letter why a MSPR/dean’s letter is not available or upload a letter as the MSPR explaining the situation.

It is also important to note that some documents that are sent directly to CaRMS from the source for Canadian medical graduates (CMGs) are provided by the applicant in the case of international medical graduates (IMGs). For example, IMG reference letters are sent directly from the referee to CaRMS whenever possible, but applicants are also able to submit notarized copies themselves.
