CaRMS service contracts are limited to the Application and Matching Program (i.e. our service contract begins upon participation in a match and concludes upon matching with the provision of a contract or letter of intent), and state that applicants must be available to begin their residency on July 1st of the match year. Any leaves, deferrals, etc. would need to be worked out with the residency program to which you match.
We would suggest reaching out to the Faculties in which you are interested in training and inquiring about their leave process/guidelines, there is a contact for each program within the program descriptions on carms.ca. As the Faculty will be your employer, they should have a policy in place aligned with employment legislation. Your current student affairs office may also be able to ask on your behalf or have more information available.
Please note the applicant contract outlines this in the following clauses:
5.30 If the Applicant matches with a Residency Program, the Applicant shall be available to begin training by July 1 of the year in which the residency training commences, unless the Faculty agrees to a deferred start date. Where practicable, the Applicant shall disclose their request for a deferred start date within their CaRMS Online application.
5.31 The Applicant acknowledges that the Faculties, in their discretion, may disqualify the Applicant if the Applicant is not able to begin residency training by July 1 of the year the residency training commences.
