The Family Medicine Structured Reference form will no longer be requested by any program in the 2021 R-1 Main Residency Match. The types of reference documents requested by individual programs will be identified in their program descriptions, which will be published on November 23.
The decision to discontinue the use of the document was made by Family Medicine program directors after receiving feedback on the form from many stakeholders. They asked us to share the following message on their behalf:
The Family Medicine Program Directors from across Canada have decided to postpone the implementation of the Structured Reference Form until the 2022 CaRMS match cycle.
We recognize the many changes and difficult circumstances that medical students are facing this year, and regret any further stress this initiative may have contributed to.
We stand behind the evidence-based benefits of the Structured Reference Form in improving transparency and fairness for applicants, enhancing efficiency for referees, and offering increased value in the selection process.
We look forward to continued engagement with stakeholders as we bring forth change to improve the selection process for all.
We apologize for any disruption this may have caused. We will be reaching out directly to applicants who have already submitted a request for a structured reference form with their next steps.
