Why can programs only request a maximum of 3 references within their program description requirements?

On December 17, 2024, the AFMC Resident Matching Committee (ARMC) made a recommendation to limit the number of reference letters that can be requested by a program to a maximum of three for all future matches, including both R-1 and subspecialty matches.

This recommendation was approved by the Standing Committee on Education (SCE) on January 9, 2025, and subsequently endorsed by the AFMC Board on February 3, 2025.

In accordance with this new policy, programs are now limited to requesting a maximum of three reference letters.

We understand this change may not align with the preferences of all programs and appreciate that it may require adjustments to your current processes.

If you have concerns or would like to discuss this further, we encourage programs to reach out directly to the AFMC.
