What are all the different application streams in the R-1 Match?

An application stream is a specific number of residency positions allocated by a province based on who is eligible to apply in relation to their medical training.

There are different application streams within the R-1 match. As an example, the CMG Stream is for Canadian medical graduates, applicants that will be graduating or have graduated from a Canadian medical school can apply to this stream of positions. The IMG stream is for International medical graduates, applicants that will be graduating or have graduated from International medical schools can apply to this stream of positions.

Application Streams for Canadian Medical Graduates (CMG)

CMG stream: Only graduates of Canadian medical schools , excluding military applicants, can apply.
CMG including MOTP/MMTP stream: Only graduates of Canadian medical schools, including military applicants, can apply.
CMG RoS Stream: Only graduates of Canadian medical schools, excluding military applicants, can apply. Matched applicants would have to sign a return of service.
CMG Indigenous Stream: Only graduates of Canadian medical schools, and of indigenous ancestry, excluding military applicants, can apply.  
RGP Stream: Only Canadian medical graduates of NOSM University’s Rural Generalist Pathways program can apply.  
MOTP-MMTP stream: Only military applicants can apply.
Competitive stream: Graduates of Canadian or International Medical schools can apply. Positions are outside Québec. ●​
Competitive RoS stream: Graduates of Canadian or International Medical schools , excluding military applicants, can apply. Positions are outside Québec. ●​
Competitive stream including MMTP/MOTP: Graduates of Canadian or International Medical schools, including military applicants, can apply. Positions are outside Québec.  
Regular stream: Graduates of Canadian or International Medical schools can apply. Positions are in Québec only. ●​
Regular RoS Stream: Graduates of Canadian or International Medical schools can apply. Positions are in Québec only.  Matched applicants would have to sign a return of service. ●​
Regular steam including MOTP/MMTP: Graduates of Canadian or International Medical schools, including military applicants, can apply. Positions are in Québec only.
Particular stream: Graduates of Canadian, U.S or International Medical schools, who have previously undertaken residency training in Canada or the United States (including fellowships), and/or who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

Nova Scotian IMG Stream: Only graduates of international medical schools, including graduates of schools of osteopathic medicine, who have a proven connection to Nova Scotia ,can apply. ●​
New Brunswicker IMG Stream: Only graduates of international medical schools, including graduates of osteopathic medicine, who are New Brunswickers with a proven connection to New Brunswick, can apply.
Competitive stream: Graduates of Canadian or international medical schools, excluding military applicants, can apply. Positions are outside Québec. ●​
Competitive RoS stream: Graduates of Canadian or international medical schools , excluding military applicants, can apply. Positions are outside Québec. ●​
Competitive stream including MMTP/MOTP: Graduates of Canadian or international medical schools, including military applicants, can apply.  
Regular stream: Graduates of Canadian or international medical schools can apply. Positions are in Québec only. International Medical school graduates must have their diploma assessed by the CMQ before they can apply. ●​
Regular RoS Stream: Graduates of Canadian or international medical schools can apply. Positions are in Québec only. Matched applicants would have to sign a return of service. International Medical school graduates must have their diploma assessed by the CMQ before they can apply. ●​
Regular steam including MOTP/MMTP: Graduates of Canadian or International Medical schools, including military applicants, can apply. Positions are in Québec only. International Medical school graduates must have their diploma assessed by the CMQ before they can apply.
Particular stream: Graduates of Canadian, U.S or International Medical schools, who have previously undertaken residency training in Canada or the United States (including fellowships), and/or who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents.  

Note: Not all streams will be available in each iteration or offered by each program. It is important to review the program descriptions to determine which streams are available for the match and cycle you are participating in.
