What types of reference documents currently exist for the R-1 match?

There are three types of references for this match:

1) Letter of reference: This type of reference document is a detailed letter that describes a referee’s experiences with the student and recommending them for further medical training.

2) Applicant support form: This type of reference document is a specific form/questionnaire created by a program that can be requested as part of their application requirements. These forms are available within the program descriptions of the program's that are requiring them and it is the student’s responsibility to provide the link to the form within their reference request.

3) Structured Reference letters: This type of reference document is a specific form/questionnaire created by a discipline (nationally) and can be requested as part of a program's application requirements.

This type of reference document is requested if applicants are applying to programs that require it.

Family Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Orthopedic Surgery, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Psychiatry and Pediatric Structured Reference Letters are completed directly in CaRMS Online by reference providers, which means that once applicants pick these disciplines from the drop-down menu in their CaRMS Online account, it is automatically assigned to the correct form.

PLEASE NOTE: Anesthesiology and Dermatology have received approval for national usage but are still within their trial year. This form is still considered an applicant support form within the program requirements. It is the applicant's responsibility to provide a link to the form within their request to their referee, just as they would for an applicant support form. These links can be found within the program descriptions of all anesthesiology and dermatology programs.

Below is a list of programs requiring either an applicant support form and/or structured reference letters

PLEASE NOTE: Although we try our best to keep the list of programs that require a reference form as up to date as possible, it is the applicant's responsibility to review program descriptions to confirm a program's reference requirements.
